For the past few years, Christmas has been such a source of stress and embarrassment for me.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
There have been years where we couldn't afford to buy our daughter presents. Where we felt embarrassed to spend the holidays with family because we received gifts & couldn't give them.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
One year, we maxed out a credit card just to buy presents.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This year? I am doing it differently.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I no longer feel like I need to buy someone a present to show them how much I love them. Or for me to feel good enough. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I absolutely refuse to go into debt just to have something under the tree for everyone in my life. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This year, I will spend time. I will pick up the phone & call. I will tell my loved ones how much they mean to me. I will make homemade gifts for teachers. I will remember what truly matters during the holiday season. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Will I buy gifts? Absolutely. But I no longer feel like I need to go into debt to do so. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Minimalism has changed the way I see Christmas. It has given me the opportunity to change my mindset & take the importance off of things & gifts. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I am more intentional. I am more present & the magic of the little moments has returned!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

When I first started on this debt-free & minimalism journey, I didn't change anything. Literally, nothing.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I wanted to get out of debt and change my life but I didn't want to actually do the work that is necessary. And guess what? Nothing changed.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

My credit cards were still maxed. I was buying frivolously. Clutter was building up again in my life. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It wasn't until I decided that enough was enough & it was time to take back control of my finances that I saw a difference!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Want to get out of debt? You have to change your lifestyle. You have to change you spending habits.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Slowly but surely, I have made these changes. And my debt? It is slowly going down. It will take a long time to become debt free, I didn't accumulate this debt overnight, but I am FINALLY on the right track! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Here’s to 33! & simple birthdays with just my husband and daughter, take out and delicious cake. Sometimes, on special days like a birthday, we feel like we should go out and be busy and do all the things. Yesterday, I did none of that. And it was one of the best birthdays I have had filled with small moments and my two favorite people in the world. Do you go big on your birthday? Or do you like to keep it slow and simple?

I used to do it all wrong. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I was so worried about having spending money that I set that aside before putting anything into debt or savings.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
There was always something I wanted to buy and I made that a priority.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Minimalism has changed all that! Now, if I need something new, I either wait and make do with what I have or put a little aside each paycheck. I have also sold some items on FB Marketplace to put into our new couch fund or for a new pair of jeans.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I have learned to prioritize getting out of debt and each month, when my husband and I do our budget, I make sure my bills are paid and an extra payment goes to a credit card before I give myself spending money! (Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely still splurge sometimes and spend way too much on take out because I’m too lazy to cook but that is so much less since changing my habits!!)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

We finished our 10 day decluttering challenge with letting go of these items! My daughter has had the Frozen castle for years and has lost all of the pieces so we will be donating the castle itself! She also lost most of the pieces to the Spirograph so we will be letting go of that! This challenge has been so amazing, for both me & my daughter, and we will be doing it again soon!! For days 6 & 7, we are decluttering a book and a stuffed animal! This book was bought at a time when she was acting out and we wanted a way to connect with her and make it a learning experience. It served its purpose but isn’t something she needs anymore! And this dragon, she used to LOVE but hasn’t played with or slept with in more than a year. Off they go!! This is something I never understood! I thought that in order to save money or have extra money, I needed to make more.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

While that definitely helps, if you don't change your spending habits, you will just wind up spending more!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Since embracing minimalism, I can't even tell you how much money I have saved! I have started paying off credit card debt. I have spending money each month. I am able to put more to my student loans to hopefully pay them off faster. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

And all of that happened because I don't spend like I used to. I don't shop when I am bored and I either make do with what I have or save before I buy something!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
