“Keep shining, beautiful one. The world needs your light.” – Author Unknown

Right before my eyes, my daughter is growing up. I’m not sure how six years have flown by, but boy have they ever.

I know that you have probably heard a million moms say this, but it truly feels like just yesterday that I saw her beautiful little face for the first time. As I have watched her grow from a little toddler to an independent first grader, there have already been so many things she has encountered.

10 Things I Want My Daughter To Know As She Grows Up

She has dealt with mean girls in school.

She has learned how to make friends and which kids she doesn’t want to be friends with.

She has gained so much confidence in herself.

She has started to learn about who she is and what she likes and doesn’t like.

It is terrifying to think of my little girl spreading her wings and flying but I know, one day, it will happen. Thankfully, not anytime soon, but I want her to be equipped with the tools to navigate her future.

There are so many things I want to tell her. So many things I want to teach her. So many things I want her to know as she grows into her own person.

This list is for her.

1. I Am Not Perfect But I Am Trying

I make mistakes, a lot of them. All the time. I will never be a perfect mother. I know I yell too much and some days I have no patience. There have been plenty of times when I have felt like I was failing. But even on my worst days, I am trying. I still have a lot to learn about being a mom but I promise you that I will always keep trying.

2. I’ve Got Your Back Always

No matter what, I’m on your side. Even if the entire world turns their back on you, I will always be there. Even if you decide on a life that I don’t think you should, I will support you. Feel confident in your path in life and know that I have your back, forever.

3. Be Yourself

“Be yourself, everyone else is already taken.” As you grow up, the world will try to tell you that you need to be someone else. Don’t listen. Be whoever it is you want to be. If your friends laugh at you because you like to watch Disney, then they aren’t your friends. Hold tight to who you are.

4. Always Try Your Best

Whether you are trying something for the first time or practicing something you have done a million times, always try your best. Give everything your best shot, no matter what it is. If your best in school is a C+ in math class, that’s okay, as long as you gave it your all. That is what matters the most.

5. It’s Not The Quantity Of Your Friends But The Quality

It is better to have one friend that you can count on and who loves you for you then having 100 friends who make fun of you or are not nice to you. I can count on two hands the number of REAL friends that I have who would be there for me in any situation. It is not the number of friends you have that counts but the quality of those people you chose to let into your life. Your friends should lift you up, not bring you down. Always remember that. Be selective with the people you share your life with.

6. Respect Yourself First

You need to respect to yourself before anyone else will. Don’t EVER be afraid to stand up for yourself. If someone isn’t treating you right, know that you deserve more. Respect your body. Know what you deserve and don’t accept anything less, from anyone.

7. You Can Always Come Home

Always. Even if you are 32. Even if it is 2:00 in the morning on a Tuesday. You can always come home. Our door will always be open to you and this will always be your home. I want you to go out into the world and create your own life but know that you are always welcome here.

8. Be Kind, To Everyone

Especially those people who you may not think deserve it. Sometimes, they need your kindness more than anyone. Now, this doesn’t mean you let people walk all over you. Absolutely not. But, I want you to be kind to everyone you meet. A smile costs you nothing but can mean the world to someone else. Show compassion, be respectful and brighten someone’s day. It will make you feel good, too.

9. Even If You Fail, Keep Trying

“If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.” Beautiful girl, don’t ever give up. No matter how many times you fail, get up and try again. No one is perfect and most people don’t get it right on the first try. Don’t get down on yourself but rather learn from your mistakes and keep going. You will never get anywhere if you quit on the first try.

10. You Are So Loved

You have no idea just how loved you are. By so many people. Please, never forget that wherever you go and whatever you do, you are loved. You are the light in my life and that will never change, no matter how old you get.

What is one thing you want your daughter to know as she grows up? What about your son??
